Microscopic image of a layer of well-ordered DNA nanotubes. This layer will form the basis of an active, contractile muscle-like mechanical system.
We are creating materials capable of some of the mechanical functions of living cells, such as responsive contraction and shape changes. We envision these materials being parts of next-generation sensors and devices capable of, e.g., delivering drugs, sensing the presence of certain chemicals, or assisting in wound healing.
