New classes of soft, cell-mimicking microparticles are being synthesized which both physically resemble cells (left) and contain internal compartments (right).
This project focuses on the synthesis, characterization and applications of new cell-mimicking microparticles. We are developing techniques to produce deformable particles that can readily pass through small constrictions and bear various cargos, as cells routinely do. By combining advances in microfluidic and lithography technologies, we can engineer new functional particles. Such an advance evokes visions of a new class of in vivo applications where cell-like synthetic particulates are used for cargo delivery, therapeutics, sensing, or patient diagnostics.
