Research Interests

We engineer biomolecules with special properties—for instance, photoreception, paramagnetism, water diffusion—to develop new fluorescent and magnetic resonance reporters for studying biological systems that are beyond the reach of conventional molecular imaging technologies. Our goals are two-fold: 1) to engineer fluorescent reporters for studying cell function in anaerobic conditions, 2) to engineer MRI reporters for studying biological function in the context of intact animals. To accomplish these goals, we pursue a highly cross-disciplinary approach—drawing on principles from protein design, cellular engineering, time-lapse fluorescence imaging, MRI, microbiology, and small animal experimentation.
